Cork, cut square and round, burnt through with the tile faces — 中, 發, 八萬, 順. Four to a set, one for each seat.
The Winning Hand
White jade bodhi beads, each one carved and inked as a tile. Brought back from the temple at Mount Putuo, where a string like this is worn for luck at the table.

The Court Cups
Spade, heart, diamond, club — each court set on square porcelain, with a lidded top and a red finial. The lid keeps the tea warm through a long rubber.
Four Suits Napkins
All four suits, quartered. Black, white, and a single red.
Suit Dishes
Four small dishes, one to each suit, rimmed in antique gold. For olives, for sweets, for the rings that come off before play.
Considered objects.
Chosen by hand and kept in small numbers. Not all of it belongs on the table — some of it you wear, and a good deal of it is bought to give away.
We add pieces slowly, and only when one is worth adding.
